Arthur was greatly troubled for Sir Kay, and made up his mind that he would find him a sword somewhere.
So, riding back to the tournament field, Arthur remembered the sword in the stone and rode quickly to the churchyard.
All the knights left there to guard the sword had also gone to the tournament.
No one was near.
Arthur tied his horse to a tree and went over to the stone.
There was the sword sticking by its point in the steel anvil.
Arthur climbed up and placed his hand on the richly decorated handle of the sword.
And lo, when he once that it was the sword of the stone.
"How came you by this sword?" asked Sir Kay.
"I drew it from out the anvil on top of the stone in the churchyard." said Arthur.
Sir Kay went at once to his father and, showing him the sword, his said, "See this sword. It is the sword of the stone and it is my hand. Therefore I am the rightful king of England."
