Centers designed more like homes than schools, more like an informal area than a playground, come closer to providing the archetypal childhood experience. such settings can provide both the emo-tional freedom "to be" and the mental opportunity "to learn" that characterize home and center.
To ensure that the child care centers we design today become the "favorite places" in the adult memo-ries of the children who attend them, a residential moder design, is at the heart of this book. Examples of this model-featured in Chapter 21, "A Model for the Future"-can be found throughout the book.

Designing Spirited Places : The True Purpose of Architeture
Architecture plays a key role in creating the experi-ences we want for our children. The etymology of the word itself, reveals a relationship between the spirit of a place and the true purpose of the architectural pro-fession.
Architecture is the act of using material to meke the ideal become manifest. It is the place where mind and matter combine produce built forms reflecting the values and ideals of the institution, the designers, the builders, and the society as a whole. It is a process used by humanity to bring heaven to earth, spirit into mat-ter. Conscientious architects can contribute to healing the earth, it is part of their charter.
Different architectectural shapes convey different meanings. Rounded op curved forms, typical of reli-gious and spiritual structures, represent the "ideal." Triangular forms represent technology. Square forms represent the earth. In a wholesome child care center, all three forms are represented. Especially curvud ones that enable the spirit to soar.
While the question of which shapes and materials to use is singnificant, the matter of greatest import per-tains to the ideals. What is it we wish to manifest? Wat is the "heaven" we wish to bring to childrens earth? What is it we most want them to understand (to "stand" under them)? In terms of what architect Louis Kahn calls a buildings "existence will." what does a place ofr children want to be? Can the building offer them in the realization of selfhood? Most importantly feel loved?
As was stressed in Chapter 1, action follows thought. Our beliefs and thoughts about the ideals we wish to manifest ultimately determine the quality, and the depth of spirit, of the places we create for children. It is on these ideals that we need to focus, first and fore-most.
